Students with hearing loss are sometimes called the forgotten child. Hearing loss is not always a visible disability.

You may not see a student's hearing loss, but it is definitely there! A child with a hearing loss might have a different speech pattern. Their language may not be as developed as their age group. Perhaps he or she has hearing aids. Teachers and parents must be careful not to overlook this disability!

A hearing impaired child may seem to be doing okay, but without appropriate help (especially in the early years) missing gaps are created in language, social development, general knowledge, etc.

If you have any concerns about a student's hearing loss, please contact your school nurse. The school nurse will most likely screen the child, look at previous records, and/or refer him or her to a physician and/or an audiologist.
